    Application for residence permit in Denmark

    If you are not an EU/EEA student and you plan to study in Denmark for a period of time longer than 3 months, you have to apply for a residence permit. Please, observe that the residence permit is only temporary and intended to register students while enrolled at university or college in Denmark. Students from certain countries must also apply for a Schengen Visa to enter Europe. We recommend you contact the embassy or consulate in your country to learn whether you need to apply for a Schengen Visa.

    What documents do you need to apply for a residence permit in Denmark?
    • The filled-in application form, named by the code ST1 Click here to download the application form for residence permit in Denmark.
    • Please, observe that the application form is divided into two main parts. The higher education institution where you have been admitted to, will fill in its corresponding part. You will then have to fill in your corresponding part before submitting your application for residence permit.
    • The letter of acceptance from your higher education institution indicating that you have been admitted to full-time studies
    • A copy of the pages in your passport where personal data can be read
    • Two recent passport-sized photo
    • A copy of your health insurance plan
    • A bank statement or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Denmark
    • Documentation confirming your accommodation details
    • Please, note that all documents must be officially translated into English or Danish.

    Where do you have to pay the application fee?
    You may pay the application fee at the Danish embassy or consulate when you submit your application.

    How much is the minimum financial subsistence requirement?
    The Danish Immigration Service requests students from certain countries to prove they have at least 25,000 DKK per semester (ca. 3,360 EUR per semester) or 50,000 DKK per year (ca. 6,720 EUR per year) to support yourself financially.*

    How long does it take to process an application for residence permit?
    The Danish Immigration Service will process your application as soon as all documentation has been submitted. Therefore, we recommend you to apply for a residence permit to study in Denmark with plenty of time in advance before your studies begin. In general, the maximum processing time is 2 months for applications for a residence permit as a student.

    Residence permit for EU students
    EU/EEA students are simply requested to inform the authorities they are residing in Denmark if they intend to stay for a period of time longer than 3 months. EU/EEA students must submit a filled-in form in person at the nearest regional State Administration office (Statsforvaltningerne). Upon approval, Statsforvaltning will issue a certificate of registration.
